Review: Sage Plant-Based Bistro & Brewery

As soon as you walk toward the entrance you may start to wonder if you’re in the right place.

Guests are welcomed by a lovely green display of succulents, trees embedded in the wood flooring and many kinds of plants, which give the air a fresh scent that leads all the way to the cash register. 

Get ready to spend a little more than your average fast food meal, as the average price for a meal can be more than $15. A great variety of healthy options are available, such as soups, salads, pizzas, sandwiches, desserts and smoothies that are 100% vegan. 

The pulled “Pork” Jackfruit BBQ cost $16. It comes with BBQ jackfruit, avocado lime dressing coleslaw and garlic aioli with a side of fries. It’s served in a to-go container made out of recycled cardboard and sealed with a “SAGE” sticker.

The first bite crunches from the French roll, followed by the soft texture of the plant based “pork.” A tangy BBQ sauce mixed within the hints of lime sauce pairs well together.

And don’t forget about the freshly cut fries; soft, tender, and natural potato flavor mixed with house-made ketchup that is not brand-named. Eating the sandwich is messy—as most pulled pork sandwiches are—with the BBQ jackfruit falling out from the French roll. Mix the falling “meat” with the fries and you can have a second meal out of it, as the portion sizes are generous. 

About 90 percent of their produce comes from local farms in Oxnard, Ventura County, Bellflower and Fillmore that practice organic and pesticide-free farming and are also committed to regenerative agriculture. 

The food you are eating in the restaurant has been picked either the day of or the day before.  

Sage Plant Based Bistro & Brewery is open Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Credit cards are accepted and there is a parking lot and metered street parking available.
