Review: JamaFo Xpress

Many Black owned businesses continue to struggle to find customers during the pandemic. A Google Spreadsheet created by Kat Hong, an editorial assistant for the Infatuation website, lists many black owned businesses in Los Angeles. It gained popularity after it was mentioned in a Los Angeles Times article titled “Here’s a list of more than 200 Black-owned food businesses in L.A.”

One of the businesses listed is JamaFo Xpress, a Jamaican food restaurant in Canoga Park.

Their menu is compiled with traditional Jamaican cuisine jerk chicken, oxtail, and beef patties. They also have a vegan menu, serving a coconut curried tofu box and jerk tofu and pineapples box.

Their website shows photos of the food that they serve. They’re clearly displayed and also describe what the customer will purchase.

Island wings are also served in five or eight pieces. Customers can choose between five different flavors: Jamaican jerk, mango habanero, Scotch bonnet, romantic mood, farm garlic parmesan, breezy barbecue and simply naked.

The romantic mood flavored wings came delivered coated in a bourbon sauce. With ranch dressing provided by the restaurant, the wings are delicious. The bourbon sauce had a hint of spice, but it wasn’t uncomfortable to eat.

For fans of spice, without having to reach for a water bottle, the flavor romantic mood would be great.

The meat of the wings wasn’t tough or hard to eat off the bone. With the amount of sauce on the meat, it was getting everywhere. It was messy to eat.

A side option was their island vegetable rice with a mix of peas, carrots and corn. When served with the romantic mood wings, it was a perfect balance.

Other side options are the coconut rice and beans and regular white rice.
Jamafo Xpress is located at 22213 Sherman Way in Canoga Park for those who crave wings. They’re open Monday to Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. They also offer take out through their website here.
