Escondido Falls: A Hidden Paradise

Triana Pardon

What better way to enjoy your weekend and appreciate nature than to take a scenic hike through one of California’s most vivid mountain ranges? The Santa Monica Mountains are home to Escondido Falls, a trail worth the walk.

Off Pacific Coast Highway, between Ramirez Canyon Road and Laitgo Canyon Road, is a private street called East Winding Way. A parking lot is conveniently located off of East Winding Way for anyone using the trail.

Walk a mile down East Winding Way until you approach the trailhead. From here, the hike is a simple mile until you reach the first waterfall.

On the right side of this fall, a steep path that requires some rock climbing will lead you to a second, more colossal waterfall.

This part of the trail is intended for more experienced hikers and may require some assistance from ropes.

Escondido Falls is a serene sight to see after walking for quite some time.

Dip your feet into the surrounding pools and let the refreshing mist cool you down before you begin your hike back down the mountain.

Walking down Winding Way, you’ll encounter a sea of gorgeous wildflowers cascading up and down the hillside of the trail. ()
