If you drive too fast, you will probably miss this place. And what a shame it would be.
Dr. Hogly Wogly surrounded by tall apartment buildings and local businesses on the busy Sepulveda Blvd. It is tucked in between a liquor store and a barber shop. The rooftop is covered with grey-brown shingles, black-brown wooden trims and the exterior walls are painted beige.
As you approach the front of the establishment, you will notice artificial grass flooring. Circular stone-topped tables sit awaiting prospective customers.
Once you’re inside you will be greeted with a pleasant smile and welcoming voices from servers. Jeri Stark, in particular, has a great personality and was very friendly. She makes you feel at home. She makes you laugh. And she makes you want to come back.
Dr. Hogly Wogly is a restaurant that serves Texas style BBQ. They slow smoke their meat with firewood in an authentic brick pit oven. And their menu is very simple.
They don’t serve salads or burgers but they focus on serving the tasty BBQ meat. To top it all off, they have a choice of spicy or non-spicy famous BBQ sauce to dip the meat in.
The combination of sweet, tangy, smoky, beefy meats are very flavorful. A big bite of meaty beef ribs provided great satisfaction to the soul and stomach. And the briskets are to die for. Soft, tender and perfectly cooked to satisfy your palate. They are simply out-of-this-world.
A piece of soft warm bread and a choice of two side dishes are included with a meal when dinner is ordered from the menu. Options include baked beans, macaroni salad, potato salad, french fries or coleslaw.
Big, golden wedges of warm french fries are a classic dish that any family would enjoy.
Baked beans and coleslaw were bland. However, the macaroni salad was deliciously creamy and soft with every bite. The celery gave the texture a satisfying crunch and the potato salad was chunky but tender.
And if your stomach is not filled, BBQ sandwiches can be ordered and eaten to your heart’s content. They also provide sandwiches, chicken, Texas-style hot links, pulled pork, spare ribs, and ham.
Sweet potato, peach, and pecan pie ala mode can be the cherry on top of a satisfying Dr. Hogly Wogly meal.
