Review: Casa Di Papi

One need not look so far in Los Angeles, no less the San Fernando Valley, to find a Mexican grill, but students of Pierce College should try their time at Casa Di Papi located on Sherman Way and Shoup Avenue. It’s a small establishment, but the service is always welcoming to guests, whether they are stopping for a small bite to eat or ordering pick up. The staff will refer to customers as “boss” while ordering their food or making sure everything is served well, and all the while, “Walker Texas Ranger” will be playing on TV. Quite a nice change in atmosphere and presentation.

Casa Di Papi lies in a strip mall, so it is fairly easy to miss the first time a customer is looking for it. The parking can be congested close to the business, but the area around Niko’s Restaurant has enough space for someone to park their car, which is a good stone’s throw away.

Unfortunately, during one run-through, the fountain service for the drinks was down, but the restaurant came prepared with bottled water or soda. Nothing is overlooked at this restaurant. It’s nice being in good hands in a small place surrounded by Mexican film posters to create a more intimate, laid-back feeling for the atmosphere. It’s not suggested to eat in quite as much, but there’s enough room for a group of friends to congregate and socialize on a weekend.

For a friendly recommendation on what to order, the California Burrito is considered their specialty. It’s a decent-sized meal stuffed with asada, pico, cheese, guacamole, salsa, sour cream, and fries – yes, fries – in the burrito. It may sound a little too much to take in, but it’s assured to fully satisfy any consumer. It’s guaranteed to fill the stomach for anyone who takes a bite. Coupled with a side of nachos, it will most definitely complete the warm meal.

A single Pierce student could order a meal for $10, give or take, and have quick, courteous service in groups, but, again, this restaurant is more about take out and delivery than eating in, so it’s not ideal to bring a grand party. Nevertheless, Casa di Papi offers a welcoming service for anyone in a quick hurry and their goal is to give the customer priority. It may not look like much either inside or outside but it’s assured everyone is in good hands.
