Couture eats at Slaw Dogs

Nestled away in Woodland Hills on the long stretch of Ventura Boulevard is Slaw Dogs. It is one of three restaurants by the same name; the others being in Pasadena and Durante. Despite its small size, humble exterior painted pale gold and minimal patio décor, the mini restaurant is far from what it seems.

Customers are greeted on their arrival by the owner himself, Ray Byrne. Once seated at one of the many polished wooden tables he asks if it is my first time eating at Slaw Dogs. Upon finding out that it was, Byrne swiftly skims over the set menu while informing me of the day’s special—Vienna dogs coated in goat cheese, caramelized onions, garlic aioli and ghost peppers—codenamed Da 4G. Note that this dog in particular is for the adventurous and spice enthusiast as it uses one of the hottest peppers in the world for seasoning. For those with more mild taste buds, The Traditional, which is your standard chili dog done the Slaw way is the way to go and priced at a fair $4.99. Slathered with fresh chili, gooey shredded cheese, crisp diced onion and tangy mustard, it is delightful and filling.

If those visiting Slaw Dogs are looking for something with a little less frankfurter, the menu offers an array of burgers and fresh salads. Varying from familiar to eclectic, they have it all. Pair a Greek salad ($7.99) filled with juicy tomato, cumber, fluffy feta cheese and Italian dressing with a California burger ($7.49) piled high with alfalfa sprouts, avocado and Swiss cheese. For the daring veggie lovers out there the Veggie Philly ($6.99) is an interesting take on the east-coast classic. Toppled on a veggie patty are black beans, Swiss and nacho cheese and fresh Pico De Gallo fixed in a warm grilled Hawaiian roll.

In between sides of Beer Battered O Rings, Thai slaw, and sweet potato fries, the young waiters check in on their tables. Polite yet brief, they ask how the meal is and if everything is to your liking. It is their friendly service that has helped Slaw Dogs earn their as one of the most pleasant places to dine. Their attentiveness is fresh and welcomed.

After the meal each customer is thanked for their company by Byrne’s as they leave. Reminiscent of family-owned and operated restaurants of yesteryear Slaw Dogs provides an intimate dining experience without the hefty price tag. Office workers and college students alike are able to enjoy the wild eats at this small establishment without draining their pockets. Just be warned that it is best to come on an empty stomach because it is impossible to say no to sample all they have to offer.
