Diverse families on the rise

Now more than ever, the United States is seeing increasing numbers of racially-blended families.

The Census of 2010 reported a 28 percent rise in interracial marriages and a 16 percent increase in unmarried mixed couples.

This represents more than a society’s ability to see past skin color; this embodies acceptance through the unification of different cultures.

The breaking of the color barrier is a testament to the progressive times, but it has the potential to become far more than that. If people are more open to understanding and accepting those who are dissimilar, the closer our society will come to finally eliminating the bonds that have held our national and global mentality back for so many years.

Perspective changes everything. Tolerance now can lead to a more open-minded future where our children won’t see color as a means of separation but as a unique story full of rich history and significance.

This melting pot that is the United States is ours to mold and the precedents set today can change the world.
