Walking into Voodoo Doughnut on CityWalk in Universal City, customers see wall-to-wall pink décor with Halloween-like figures and trinkets, including a menu printed on a mounted pink coffin. Merchandise, including donut-shaped coffee cups, tumblers with the business’ logo, hats, and t-shirts, are on shelves next to the counter. Families sit eating donuts in front of stained-glass windows as patrons come in and out with sweet treats.
After waiting in line with a friend to purchase donuts, an employee wearing a bandana over her hair, a face mask, and a black t-shirt with the shop’s logo took our order. We purchased a Marshall Mathers donut and a Voodoo Doll donut, which the employee quickly boxed up for us after putting on black food safety gloves. The price was reasonable for two donuts.
Then, we walked outside and found a table so that we could enjoy a Friday night dessert.
As I tried the Marshall Mathers donut, it had a lot of candy on top and was really sweet. It is a plain cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and mini M&M’s. My friend tried a bite and described the texture as doughy and sweet. The donut was very bright in color and looked delicious.
I personally didn’t like the mixture of the M&Ms and the icing on top of the donut because it was too strong. The dough, on the other hand, didn’t feel soft, almost as if the donut was sitting out too long. The shop could maybe offer fresh donuts to customers who come later in the day to encourage them to come back again.
The Voodoo Doll donut is a raised yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stick. According to the menu, each Voodoo Doll donut is unique with different characteristics. I chose to order this donut because it’s close to Halloween and it stood out compared to the other donuts. We thought the dough and raspberry filling were really good and soft compared to the other donut.
In my opinion, I would go back to Voodoo Doughnut, but I would try different donuts and probably go early in the morning. I would recommend going early since parking in and around CityWalk can be difficult and frustrating. If you do park on the street below CityWalk, there are shuttles that can take you up the hill. Next time I visit, I would try the Oh Captain, My Captain donut because it has Cap’n Crunch cereal on top, which I love.
