Whether it’s authentic Salvadorian cooking or hand crafted homemade cakes, La Paz Bakery is a one-stop shop. The bakery has been around for more than 20 years and is well known among the community for its delicious cakes, assorted cookies, danishes and traditional Salvadorian meals.
The bakery is located at the intersection of De Soto Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard. The bakery has enough seating for 12 people, but take out is also available.
The smell of fresh baked goodness seeps through the front door, inviting pedestrians to stop by and try at least one of the yummy items on the menu. Inside, the traditional Salvadorian decorations and coziness give the feel of being invited over to a friend’s house for a delicious homemade meal.
The process of ordering is fast food style where you order, pay then leave. For an appetizer the fried bananas are a mixture of sweet caramelized, crunchy fried goodness, mixed with a bit of saltiness.
A traditional Salvadorian dish, pupusas are filled with either fresh made beans and cheese or simply melt in your mouth gooey cheese. The salsa and curtido (cabbage relish) compliment the pupusa. The curtido adds the perfect sweetness to balance the spiciness of the salsa. Cola Champagne, a tropic soda found in certain markets and restaurants, is a complimentary beverage to wash down the meal with its carbonated sweetness. Being darker than most cream sodas and lighter than most colas, Cola Champagne is a refreshing treat.
For dessert, a slice of Milhojas (thousand sheets) is appealing both by its interesting look and smell. These delicately made cakes are a combination of stacked layers of puffy pastry filled with arequipe, otherwise known as dulce de leche. This sweet slice of heaven is packed with flavor and leaves a lingering hint of powdered sugar.
