From the outside, Exotic Thai Café is not exactly appealing. Located at the end of a seedy strip mall on Ventura Boulevard and Fallbrook Avenue in Woodland Hills, Calif., it is somewhat of a turn-off. But, the front door opens, the atmosphere changes and the walls of the San Fernando Valley transform to a gem somewhere in Thailand.
The décor is done in simple muted colors of gold, brown, black and copper with wood wall covering, intricately designed. There is a feeling of richness. The low lighting provides a feeling of privacy, perfect for date night and conversation.
The service was enjoyable. The waitress wore the standard black slacks and collared black T-shirt with a matching half-black apron. She was exceptionally eager to share what she thought was the best in the house.
Lettuce wraps with chicken, the “Chef Special” appetizer, started the meal. Its presentation was flawless. The freshest ingredients were used and the lettuce was snappish in texture. The waitress came by several times and gave pointers on how to wholly enjoy the wraps, by mixing the sauces and to experiment.
This is a place for meat, fish and vegetable lovers that can, without a doubt, cater to special dietary needs. The entrée came immediately upon completion of the appetizer—Pad Thai noodles with shrimp and steamed vegetables with tofu.
Both plates were balanced with blends of exotic spices and sweet flavors, as well as crisp and soft textures — and served hot.
Enjoy a selection of Singha beer or a Thai iced tea. The later is not too sweet, like in a lot of places, and is the finest non-alcoholic beverage on the menu.
The stomach may be full, but the taste buds leap with joy when the dessert menu comes around. Sticky rice with mango is the house special. They use authentic waxy rice from East Asia, and like in East Asia, it can be eaten with fingers.
When the appetite screams Thai, there is no need to fight the traffic to Thai Town. Exotic Thai is the San Fernando Valley choice.
